Lip gloss is a hugely popular
cosmetic item that was invented in 1930. Max Factor, the founder of Max Factor
cosmetics, invented it in order to make actresses look better on film. Moist
lips are associated with sex appeal and he wanted the actresses in Hollywood to
look their sexy best in the black and white films being made at the time. Max
Factor's original gloss was sold all the way until 2003 when it was finally
taken off the market.
In more recent times, lip plumpers
have become popular since full, pouty lips are also considered to be a sign of
sex appeal. Some women will get lip injections to make their lips appear
fuller. But lip plumper can provide a bit of that same effect at a more
reasonable cost and without the risk of injection. Lip plumpers work because
they have a mild irritant in them. The either use something cooling and minty,
or something spicy and a bit hot. If one type of lip plumper is too irritating
to your lips, try a different brand. Ideally, you can go somewhere and try it
out before you make your purchase.
For many teenage girls, gloss is
their very first makeup that they're allowed to wear. And this is because many
many times they provide just a touch of color and can help keep lips soft. Lip
gloss tends to look more natural than lipstick, though it depends on the
specific form of lip gloss that you choose.
There are many different types of
gloss on the market and they can be applied in different ways. Chapstick or lip
balm is closely related to gloss, but used primarily to provide protection from
the sun, wind and other elements to help keep your lips soft. Some lip glosses
cross over a bit into lip balm.
Some lip glosses are squeezed out of
a tube, directly onto the lips. Others are in a more semi solid form and can be
applied like a lip balm or you can put a bit on your finger and then apply
softly to your lips. There are also a variety of types of applicators with the
most common being a sponge applicator. But there are also some that use
brushes.
The glosses will depend on what you
want from your makeup. If you're just looking for some shine on top of your
lipstick, your needs will be different than someone who is looking for more
color pay off. Most lip glosses are relatively sheer but some have more
pigment. Also, some of the best lip glosses also provide moisturizing or
healthful ingredients like vitamins or emollients.
Another thing that can really vary with
different glosses is texture. I like something that has a bit of tack to it
because I think it lasts longer. But other people think the best gloss has a
smooth texture.
Many of MAC's lip glosses
(Dazzleglass, etc), have a pearlescent effect to them for a very different
look. Be cautious with pearl lip glosses as they can end up looking rather
lurid in front of the camera.
